Description:

Europe, France, first half of the 20th century from ca. 1908 photograph. Framed and matted under glass, a limited edition large scale black and white chromogenic print from a famous photograph, most likely created via dry plate emulsion entitled, "Le dirigeable Malecot a Issy-les-Moulineaux en 1908"; this title is printed on the lower left margin; "Les editions de l'Iconophile" is printed on the lower central margin; and "Photo musee de l'air - Reference A-7" on the lower right. At the turn of the twentieth century, Louis Malecot applied for a patent on a type of a mixed dirigible in several countries including the United States (US Patent 897,000 dating August 25, 1908). According to the patent, this dirigible was "lighter than air" with a wing-like construction underneath. In French this dirigible was described as a "ballon dirigeable-aeroplane mixte." Size: 15.375" L x 23.375" W (39.1 cm x 59.4 cm); 24.375" L x 32.375" W (61.9 cm x 82.2 cm) with custom mat and frame.

A fascinating historic scene, replete with spectators below in period dress, several walking or riding antique bicycles, all marveling at the enormous dirigible balloon - among the first lighter-than-air airships capable of directionable powered flight. A special glimpse of this airostat - a machine that decreased in use over time due to a series of high profile accidents and the increasing capabilities of airplanes - perfect for any fan of the history of aviation!

For a wonderful article about the Malecot dirigible see, "A New Form of Dirigible Airship: the Malecot Combined Aeroplane and Dirigible Balloon" Scientific American Supplement No. 1712 - October 24, 1908 - p. 260.
