Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A gathering of 2 wooden textile looms, each with a warp of camelid and/or cotton fibers. The upper loom features a partial monstrario with a series of abstract birds and rays, and the lower monstrario exhibits rectangular panels with a double-headed bird in each window. A monstrario was meant to be displayed as an example - or "show piece" - of the artist's ability. Size (upper loom): 6.75" W x 16" H (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm); (display frame): 2.25" L x 19.75" W x 37.5" H (5.7 cm x 50.2 cm x 95.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s

  • Condition: Pieces have not been examined outside of display frame. Minor fraying and desiccation to some threads, with light staining in scattered areas, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to motifs.
