Description:

Egypt, ca. 5th-7th Century CE. Ancient woven textile features bichrome medallion of a crouching hare rendered with spotted fur and green ears (the last looking much like an adhered butterfly). The corners of the medallion with heads seen in profile, all with hairbands, alternating with vestigial vases or lamps. Wool and linen. Textile 10 cm x 10 cm (4") - with frame 21 cm x 21 cm (8.3") .

Provenance: Ex-private Swiss Collection since the 1960s, thence Swiss art market; framed in Vancouver, Canada, January 1961.
