Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 500 to 100 BCE; Chupicuaro, 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fine gathering of 5 hand-built pottery figurines, 3 from the Chupicuaro culture and 2 from the Michoacan culture. The 2 figures along the lefthand side are of Michoacan origin: 1 with a slender body and a light red necklace, and the other of a squat, nude form with exposed genitalia, incised arm bands, and a beaded necklace embellished with white pigment. Both figures along the righthand side as well as the center figure are of Chupicuaro origin: 1 with vibrant red pigment, double-pupil eyes, and a bulbous headdress; a central male figure with a shell necklace and exposed genitals; and a nude woman with wide shoulders and a belly that hangs over her waistline. All figures are displayed within a modern picture frame. Size of largest (bottom right): 2.78" W x 3.6" H (7.1 cm x 9.1 cm); (frame): 9.8" W x 14.1" H (24.9 cm x 35.8 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to head of top-right Chupicuaro figure, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining 4 figures are intact and very good. All figures have minor abrasions, with fading to pigment on those where pigment is present, and light encrustations. Nice preservation to overall forms. All are suspension atop green velvet panel with modern fishing line. Frame is fitted with a metal suspension wire on the verso for display purposes but does not have a frontal glass panel.
