Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A beautiful textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of chocolate, crimson, golden, espresso, pink, and blue. The top brown panel has a uniform color and is sewn to a thin panel of left-facing, highly-stylized avian figures with polychrome bodies and heads. A fringe panel consists of 29 sewn tassels which alternate in color between red with gold diamonds and black with pink diamonds. Mounted within a fabric-lined frame. Size (textile): 22.75" W x 12.75" H (57.8 cm x 32.4 cm); size (frame): 24.5" W x 18.5" H (62.2 cm x 47 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
