Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fabulous textile fragment composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of wheat, fuchsia, lavender, cobalt, and espresso. The fringed lower panel depicts 13 full and 1 partial abstract birds with bulbous bodies, almond-shaped eyes, and crescent-shaped plumes atop the heads. A stepped triangular panel is attached to either side and displays dozens of smaller, more highly-stylized avian figures with nubbin legs and oblong heads. Mounted atop a fabric-lined panel inside a frame. Size (textile): 30.25" L x 11.5" W (76.8 cm x 29.2 cm); size (frame): 35" L x 17.25" W (88.9 cm x 43.8 cm).

  • Condition: Textile consists of two similar fragments sewn together. Small losses and fraying to interior and peripheral threads, fading and staining to original pigmentation. Colors and iconography are still visible and vivid.
