Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A large and fine textile fragment composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of crimson, fuchsia, gold, wheat, and tan. The top register displays 11 highly-stylized zoomorphic figures with zigzagging limbs, angular bodies, forked ears, and open mouths with something held inside. The creatures are enclosed within wheat-hued borders and atop a red ground, and a tall border of wispy fringe is draped beneath. Mounted in a frame against a fabric-lined panel. Size (textile): 25.125" W x 8.5" H (63.8 cm x 21.6 cm); size (frame): 28" W x 15.2" H (71.1 cm x 38.6 cm).
