Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderfully woven and braided textile sling or tump line - used to help carry large jars using the head to take most of the weight. The camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers are braided and woven thick strands in earthen shades of brown, russet, beige, tan forming a chevron pattern with a bifurcated / open center cradle that is warp wrapped in brown or cream on each side. This cradle would support the burden when used as a tump line and could also launch stones as a protective slingshot. A very fine example professionally mounted on a cotton backing in a modern acrylic case with suspension wire - a piece ready for displaying! Size of sling approximately: 100" L x 1" W (254 cm x 2.5 cm); case: 30.25" L x 3.2" W x 16.375" H (76.8 cm x 8.1 cm x 41.6 cm)
