Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, Late Intermediate period, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A gorgeous and sizable textile composed of tightly-woven cotton or camelid fibers in wheat hues. Embroidered motifs are sewn onto the primary textile ground and are presented in shades of cream, tan, and fuchsia. The graphic panel depicts a tall, elite figure wearing a wide tunic with pointed shoulders and an elaborate belt with arms draped to either side. Broad feet have large, delineated toes, and the angular head is adorned with a rabbit-eared headdress. A register of abstract avian figures in brown and tan are embroidered across the bottom periphery against a fuchsia-hued ground. Mounted within a modern frame.
