Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fine textile sling or tump line comprised of braided camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers in shades of brown and tan. The fibers are braided and woven into 3 strands that coalesce into a single thick cord around the central webbed cradle or pocket which was used to hold metal or stone projectiles. By harnessing centrifugal force, slings such as this were quite deadly and were known to later pierce steel armor of the invading Spanish and bring down horses a few centuries later! The sling could also function as a tump line help carry large jars using the head to lessen the burden's weight. The sling is professionally mounted on a cloth canvas in a protective acrylic case and is ready to be displayed! Size (sling): approximately 75" L (190.5 cm); (case): 30.125" L x 3.2" W x 20.375" H (76.5 cm x 8.1 cm x 51.8 cm)
