Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A lovely and large textile panel composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of brown, black, white, yellow, and red. Against a coffee-hued ground are 25 abstract zoomorphic figures with anthropomorphic characteristics such as an upright posture assisted with a cane. Each figure boasts sinuous limbs, ovoid bodies, a curling tail, and a pair of projecting black-and-white ears. A fine example of early Peruvian textile artistry! Size (textile): 11" W x 17.375" H (27.9 cm x 44.1 cm); size (frame): 17" W x 23.125" H (43.2 cm x 58.7 cm).
