Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century. A rare 19th century retablo painting on tin, depicting "La Piedad" also called "La Lamentacion." A classic rendition of la Piedad (Pieta for all you Italian Renaissance lovers out there) following the descent from the Cross when the Virgin Mary holds the body of Christ with symbols of the passion in the foreground and background as well as accompanying mourners. The tragedy is emphasized by the teary visages of Mary and the mourning figures as well as the blood streaming from Christ's stigmatas (wounds). A very special piece, not only for its meaningful iconography, but also for the dramatic Baroque style and strong technique of the artist demonstrating impressive foreshortening, strong chiaroscuro, and a striking composition. Size of actual retablo: 14" W x 20" H (35.6 cm x 50.8 cm) Size of frame: 18" W x 24.5" H (45.7 cm x 62.2 cm)
