Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. An incredibly detailed, painted textile thangka depicting Chakrasamvara embracing his shakti (female consort). They represent the concept of the joining of compassion (male) and wisdom (female), which is a common symbol in Indian, Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese Buddhism. Chakrasamvara holds his consort with two of his ten arms. With his other arms, he holds a variety of objects, including several tools and weapons. Both he and his consort are dressed in finery, wearing jewelry, crowns, and elaborate costumes. They are framed by flames and surrounded by seated figures. Every time I look at this painting, I see a new detail! A fabulous example! Size of thangka: 16" W x 25.5" H (40.6 cm x 64.8 cm); frame is: 25" W x 34" H (63.5 cm x 86.4 cm)
