Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous fan boasting a fabric leaf hand-painted with an intricate courtly dancing scene and supported by nacre shell sticks sculpted with the relief and openwork image of an enthroned Venus accompanied by Cupid as well as Muses and other deities. Lustrous gilding and spiraling flourishes additionally embellish the decorative leaf. Note the Eastern dress, the men playing ouds, and the hookah at the left; all making this a fascinating example of Orientalism.
