Description:

European, ca. 19th century CE, signed "Schaunlig" at lower left but difficult to decipher. A gorgeous pastel of a ship on tempest tossed seas with white-capped wavy waters, the ship's red sails blown by strong winds, seagulls flying about, as the sun is either rising or setting. The artist's color palette is rich, replete with blues of cerulean, teal, azure, and turquoise hues as well as contrasting reds, tawny browns, cream, lavender, yellow, and white. Moreover, the artist demonstrates an impressive command of the pastel medium - applied in layers, strategically blended resulting in wonderful transitions with some passages being incredibly smooth and others revealing more texture. Set in an elegant period frame - beautifully carved with floral motifs and gilded - under glass. Size: 29.25" W x 17.25" H (74.3 cm x 43.8 cm); 33.375" W x 21.25" H (84.8 cm x 54 cm) framed.
