East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a beautiful hand woven and embroidered and brocaded silk textile fragment mounted on a modern purple felt within a glass and wood frame. The ground panel is a peach-colored brocade, heavily embroidered in green, black, blue, pink, purple, and red threads- a floral and foliate pattern with butterflies and blooming peonies dispersed throughout. Embroidery such as this was often used on women's robes, the flowers symbolized virtues such as beauty and innocence, and marital fidelity when paired with butterflies. Size (textile): 13" L x 6.75" W (33 cm x 17.1 cm); (frame): 17" L x 11" W (43.2 cm x 27.9 cm)
