Description:

Northern Europe, England, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, ca. mid to late 18th century. A beautiful Wedgwood jasperware plaque featuring a Classical scene of Ceres, Cupid tormenting Psyche, Flora with a child, and Juno to the right. Each figure is identifiable by their iconography: Ceres holds a cornucopia, Cupid appears as a nude cherub with a bow and arrow, Psyche is next to a sheep and holds a fleece alluding the golden fleece, Flora wears a floral crown, and Juno grasps a scepter as a peacock stands to her side. Though this plaque was produced by Josiah Wedgwood, the design is by Lady Elizabeth Templeton, one of the few aristocratic ladies who created designs for Wedgwood, often in a softer, "Romantic" version of Neoclassical style. Size of plaque: 5.75" W x 3.5" H (14.6 cm x 8.9 cm); of frame: 9.4" W x 7" H (23.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
