Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Europe, France, ca. 15th century CE. A single leaf from an illuminated manuscript with 14 lines of calligraphic text and beautiful floral imagery on both sides of the vellum. The text is written in black with some letters in red. Four large illuminated initials (3 on one side and 1 on the other) rendered in gold leaf and further embellished in red and blue begin passages of the text. The stunning floral vines beside the texts are finely delinated in gold leaf, red, black, and blue pigments. This page probably comes from a Book of Hours, a prayer book used by wealthy laypeople; or a Breviary for the clergy, the Divine Office; both included Psalms, hymns, and various prayers recited at specific hours of the day. Size: 8.75" L x 6" W (22.2 cm x 15.2 cm); 11.375" L x 8.625" W (28.9 cm x 21.9 cm) framed
