Description:

Ancient Near East, Amlash, Meshkinshar, and Luristan cultures, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. A wonderful little group of ancient potteries from the near east. Included are 2 Luristani jars, one a redware pouring vessel with beaked spout, circular handle with spiked knob and decorated body in zig-zag patterns. The other Luristani vessel is a short rounded vessel with pinched trefoil spout and rounded handle. The grayware jar was found in Azerbaijan and dates to 2000 BCE. Tuned body with flared spout and rounded handle, it is decorated with a series of round circle using a device similar to a modern compass used in geometry class. Finally we have a light yellow vessel from the Amlash culture of Iran/Turkey. Short base, flared body and slightly flaring rim. Size of largest: 5.5" H (14 cm)

The story of their acquisition is almost as interesting as the pottery itself. Acquired in the early 1960's by the wife of an American businessman, these were all acquired at various bazaars across Tehran. Some were found in Iran itself, others had traveled thousands of miles across the cradle of civilization.

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
