Description:

Central Asia, northern India or Afghanistan, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A quartet of pretty brass anklets, made to be worn by camels, each with hollow bodies full of small noisemakers to create a jingling sound. Each has a richly textured cast body with distinctive relief motifs. Two of them terminate in human faces while the other two are fully abstract. They are made to be worn by sliding the open part of the ring around the slender part of a camel's ankle, then tying a brightly colored scarf through the two loops. Camels wore them at festivals. Size of one (all are fairly similar in size): 7" W (17.8 cm)
