Description:

Northern Asia, Siberia, Pleistocene Epoch, ca. 1.2 million to 24,000 years ago. A preserved example of a fossilized tooth from the prehistoric woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) with the characteristic hollowed cavities that form what is often described as a "smiling face." Thick roots in striated hues of warm brown once anchored this tooth to the jawbone. The inner dentine a deeper umber brown and the enamel is a light white-beige hue, visible on the outer edge and surrounding and highlighting the 3 natural cavities that inspired the scientific name of these rhinos, as Coelodonta antiquitatis that translates to "ancient hollow tooth." Prehistoric rhino teeth are incredibly important to understanding mammal evolution, and the enamel from a Stephanorhinus rhino provided one of the oldest samples of DNA genetic data ever collected! Size: 2" L x 1.75" W x 2.25" H (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.
