Description:

Ancient Seas, China, Guizhou, Mid Triassic period, ca. 247.2 to 237 million years ago. One of our favorite species of prehistoric creatures - a fossil of a Keichousaurus, a marine reptile, preserved in its original stone matrix, with the long neck and tail stretched out to either side of its body and its limbs curved down at its sides! Keichousaurus was a reptile that somewhat resembled an aquatic lizard, with paddle like limbs, and long tail and neck that were adapted for swimming and hunting small fish in the ancient seas that ringed the supercontinent Pangaea and mature adults did not grow much larger than this specimen! This fossil has superb details- those individual toes and ribs! These creatures died out at the end of the Triassic, a time period when many marine reptiles went extinct, leading to the rise of the dinosaur. Size (fossil): 6.8" L x 2.4" W (17.3 cm x 6.1 cm); (matrix): 12.65" L x 0.5" W x 9.75" H (32.1 cm x 1.3 cm x 24.8 cm)
