Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, Siberia, Pleistocene, ca. 3.6 million years ago to 10,000 years ago. A superb preserved lower jawbone from a woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis), a prehistoric herbivore that lived during the Ice Age. This is the lower left side of mandible with 5 teeth. Woolly rhinos were megafauna and were 6 feet (1.8 meters) high at the shoulders; they were similar in appearance to modern day rhinos, but covered with thick hair that made them adept at surviving in harsh climates. This rhino's teeth have distinctive, natural cavities that inspired the scientific name Coelodonta; "koilia" is the Greek word meaning cavity, and "donti" for tooth, thus Coelodonta antuquitatis translates to "ancient hollow tooth." Size: 16" L x 4" W x 7" H (40.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
