Description:

North America, Western United States, South Dakota, Scenic, Upper Brule Formation, Oligocene, ca. 33 million years ago. A fossilized upper skull and lower mandible from a prehistoric primitive mammal known as Hyracodon nebraskensis, a petite pony-like ungulate with slender limbs for speed, but 3-toes. This skull is prepared with the lower mandible separate and a metal support bar spanning across the center which could be displayed with an open mouth. The upper premolars have central cavities that are similar to the dentition that their rhinoceros relatives developed - indeed, Hyracodon are considered a branch of the hornless "running rhinos." The upper and lower fit together, the teeth neatly locking together and can be displayed without a stand, but this skull can easily be mounted to display the teeth! Size: 8" L x 5.5" W x 7" H (20.3 cm x 14 cm x 17.8 cm)
