North America, Alaska, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 200,000 to 10,000 years ago. A large fossilized ivory fragment from the tusk of a prehistoric woolly mammoth. The layers of the exterior surface of the tusk and interior where minerals and chemicals from sediment and water may have come into contact with the ivory, have developed a mottled brown hue. The tusk has both naturally flaked and been cut in modern times to expose the central core which contains the distinctive crosshatched graining known as Schreger lines that all proboscidean ivory exhibits. Size: 10.25" L x 4.25" W (26 cm x 10.8 cm)
