Description:

North America, Southern United States, Louisiana, Catahoula Formation, Oligocene era, ca. 33.9 to 23 million years ago. An impressive cross section from a petrified (fossilized) slab of a palm tree, attributed to the prehistoric species Palmoxylon lacunosum. The trunk fragment is sliced and polished on one end to reveal the astonishing red and orange coloration. Monocots like palms have a unique internal arrangement compared to other plant or tree types. Instead of having a solid ring of vascular tissue, their vascular bundles are scattered throughout the stem within a softer tissue. This distribution gives the stem a spotted or dotted appearance, which is visible in the cross-section. Size: 8" L x 2.5" W x 5" H (20.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
