North America, Midwest, probably Brule Formation of the White River Badlands, South Dakota, Middle Eocene through end of Miocene era. A fossilized upper skull section of an oreodont with visible teeth, one orbit (ocular cavity), and nasal cavities. The best known species (ie Leptauchenia and Merycoidodon) are usually compared to sheep in form and size, and the population of these forest dwelling mammals peaked in the late Eocene period (approximately 40 to 34 million years ago! Size: 3.75" L x 2.5" W (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

Oreodont fossils are most commonly from the Brule Formation of the White River Badlands of South Dakota. Interestingly, oreodont skeletons supported digitigrade stance, similar to that of dogs and cats, rather than unguligrade (walking on toes) stance. Furthermore, the middle ears of some Oligocene oreodonts possessed unusually large chambers, ideal for hearing low frequency sounds.
