Description:

North America, Western United States, South Dakota, Pennington County, White River / Brule Formation, Oligocene, ca. 33 to 30 million years ago. A fossilized and partial vertebral column, pelvis, femur, and tibia from a prehistoric animal known as an oreodont, completely free from a stone or sediment matrix! These oreodont remains are specifically Merycoidodon culbertsoni, a stocky ungulate with traits that are often described as camel or pig-like, such as fang like canines and pointy molars - though these animals were herbivores, roaming the North American grasslands in herds. Finds of partial skeletons are scattered across the Brule Formation often due to scavenging and flooding after the animal's death. The bones are mounted on a square plasterboard with a printed description in a clear plastic sheath attached to the board. Size of fossil (spine to pelvis): 13" L x 4" W (33 cm x 10.2 cm); plasterboard: 17.75" L x 14" W (45.1 cm x 35.6 cm)
