Description:

Ancient Seas, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras, ca. 23 to 2.6 million years ago. A monster size fossilized megalodon shark tooth - we had to grab a different caliper tool to measure it, because this tooth was slightly too big - an impressive 6.25 inches (15.9 cm)! This tooth's front enamel has been professionally polished to a smooth texture, revealing the dark stone matrix under the paler, warm beige enamel. The verso is unpolished and left in its natural state. A 6+ inch Megalodon tooth is exceptionally important due to its rarity and size, commanding a significantly higher price than smaller specimens. The scarcity of these large teeth makes them a highly sought-after treasure among collectors. Size: 6.25" L x 4.52" W (15.9 cm x 11.5 cm)

Megalodon (Carcharodon megalodon, literally "big tooth") is thought to have become extinct about 2 million years ago, although alive and well in our imagination with movies like "The Meg" and the controversial film "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives" (which presents like a documentary). Many swimmers today fear sharks and the average person can easily identify a shark tooth when they see one. It is clear why these ancient teeth inspire fear, awe, and fascination with both scientists and enthusiasts alike. Megalodon teeth are all that remain of these ancient creatures, whose skeletal structures - like those of all sharks - were made of cartilage and did not fossilize.
