North America, Pliocene to Pleistocene, Ice Age, ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A fossilized molar from a mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossilized to a lustrous black with some mineral deposits surrounding. High-crowned teeth like the mastodon's - the name literally meaning "nipple teeth" because of the shape - were suited to mashing leaves and twigs rather than grasses; mastodons lived in forested environments, unlike mammoths, who lived in open grasslands. Size: 7" L x 3.5" W x 3.75" H (17.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 9.5 cm)
