Description:

North America or Asia, Siberia, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 200,000 to 10,000 years ago. Three fossilized ivory tusk fragments from prehistoric woolly mammoths and/or mastodons! The layers of the exterior surface of the tusks have developed brown hues and have naturally flaked and been cut in modern times to expose the central core or dentine. The intact cross section also reveals the distinctive crosshatched graining known as Schreger lines that all proboscidean ivory exhibits. Mammoths and mastodons are both extinct relatives of modern elephants, but they differ in their physical characteristics and habitat preferences. Mammoths had curved tusks, and teeth adapted to browse grasses in steppe-tundra, while mastodons had shorter, straight tusks and favored forests for leaf browsing. Size of longest: 7.75" L x 2.25" W (19.7 cm x 5.7 cm)
