Description:

Ancient Seas, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras, ca. 28 to 2.6 million years old. A fossilized tooth from a megalodon shark, one of the most legendary prehistoric sea creatures that ever existed! This tooth bears the classic V-shaped profile with a serrated enamel - the edges are wonderfully tactile today - but a shivery reminder of how these sharks were able to eat- a strong bite, then thrashing their heads from side to side - the serrations on these teeth tearing chunks of flash from their prey. The enamel has developed a glossy gray surface with a matte black root and bourlette - the hues forming from the chemicals and minerals present in the water and sediment as the tooth fossilized. The teeth of these sharks can help determine their body length, and while there are several factors that must be taken into account- such as crown height and placement in jaw, it is likely this tooth came from a juvenile! Size: 3.30" L x 2.17" W (8.4 cm x 5.5 cm)
