Description:

North America, Pleistocene, ca. 1.8 million to 10000 years ago. This is an unusual partial upper jaw fossil from a prehistoric Elephantidae animal! This jaw is an extraordinary petite size; at only 3.5 inches in length (8.9 cm), this is a highly unusual find! The size and anatomy suggests a type of dwarf elephant or pygmy mammoth. During the Ice Age due to low sea levels, species such as Palaeoloxodon antiquus and mammoths colonized islands in the Mediterranean, Indonesia, and North America, but were stranded once the sea levels rose. These proboscideans eventually evolved into pygmy mammoths and dwarf elephants due to their geographical isolation. This jaw is certainly unusual, and we have never seen such a small jaw from one of these animals before! Size: 3.5" L x 3.25" W (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: private California collection, USA, by descent; ex- Alfred E. Stendahl collection, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990
