Description:

Ancient Seas, Lebanon, Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 163.5 to 66 Million years ago. Wow! This is a fabulous stone matrix with 4 complete fossils of the extinct shrimp known as Carpopenaeus callirostris. Much like today's shrimp and prawns, these creatures had long antennae, mandibles, and beady black eyes which are nicely highlighted in this example! This species of Carpopenaeus is only found in the Hadjula and Maifouk outcrops in Lebanon, the same area that in 5th century BCE Herodotus first noted fish trapped in stones - one of the earliest recorded finds of fossils! Size: 4" L x .375" W x 4.25" H (10.2 cm x 1 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
