Description:

South America, Argentina, Mid Jurassic to Cretaceous 174.1 to 66 million years ago. A collection of 3 fossilized pinecone halves that have been split open and polished to reveal the internal structures, of the seeds, now turned to stone! The larger 2 are from the same cones and fit together perfectly. These cones came from prehistoric pine trees (possibly Araucaria spp.), the exterior scales are perfectly preserved, while the cross-section has pretty shades of pink, and creamy beige hues from the mineralization. When alive, Araucaria cones are formed of a durable, woody material that is naturally resistant to decay and the tough outer scales can withstand the test of time, making them more likely to fossilize intact. Size: 3" L x 2.75" W (7.6 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
