Description:

East Africa, Madagascar, Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 200 to 66 million years ago. A sizable ammonite fossil hat has been cut and polished to reveal the natural and fascinating interior whorl patterns and vugs (cavities lined with crystals). The material inside the chambers turned into quartzite stone when water with silica and other minerals in the ocean sediment seeped in, permeating the organic material, and later solidifying in some chambers. In 6 chambers a hollow pocket formed, and the walls are textured with crystalline structures lining the surface. The outer layers of the shell are worn away, exposing the suture patterning; a fantastic display piece for showcasing the natural beauty of this ancient creature! Size: 9.75" Diameter x 2.5" W (24.8 cm x 6.4 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
