Description:

Africa, Madagascar, late Cretaceous, ca. 71 million years ago. A lovely, fossilized ammonite shell with iridescent hues that has been split and polished, revealing the fascinating interior whorl pattern, sutures and vugs (cavities filled with crystals). The iridescence along the exterior is due to aragonite on the surface, and some ammonites are highly prized for jewelry and considered gemstone quality or "ammolite." Ammolite is rare and only comes from Canada - however, under similar conditions ammonites from around the world can produce the amazing fiery hues that we see here in this African species! Size: 4.5" L x 0.75" W x 6" H (11.4 cm x 1.9 cm x 15.2 cm)
