Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mesoamerica, Guerrero region, Xochipala, ca. 13th to 9th century BCE. A female nude pottery figurine from the Xochipala culture of the Formative Period with a finely delineated visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, arched brows, a long, elegant nose, double earspools, and a hairband made from small, pierced filets and a naturalistic torso. Despite the fact that this is a section, it reads quite well and even shows some remaining red pigment. Xochipala figurines are among the earliest and most naturalistic representations of the human figure. Some scholars have suggested that these figures were created without clothing in order to lend a more realistic appearance and that the figures may have been dressed in actual clothing that did not withstand the tests of time. Custom, wooden stand. Size: 2.5" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex - private LA County collection acquired before 1990
