William Wegman (American, b. 1943). Royal Flush: Spades. Five photolithographs on paper, 1998. Publisher's proof. Hand-signed with "PP 1" beneath each image in pencil. Published by Segura Publishing Company, Tempe, Arizona, USA. A playful ensemble of 5 photolithographs by American artist William Wegman featuring a royal flush in the suit of spades with his famous Weimaraner dogs sitting in as the King, Queen, and Jack of the set. Appearing both quizzical yet unamused, the canines are dressed in elaborate outfits of varying elements, such as wigs, tiaras, tulle, a velvet scarf, a beret, and a collared tunic; each ornate costume amusingly contradicting their otherwise somber presentations. Most famous for the use of dogs in his work, Wegman has been working with Weimaraners since the 1970s, and many of his dogs, including Man Ray, Fay Ray and Flo, have become pop culture stars in their own right. Size of lithograph (all the same): 13" W x 17.25" H (33 cm x 43.8 cm); of paper: 20" W x 25.5" H (50.8 cm x 64.8 cm)
With a formalist's eye and an affinity for bold color, the Wegman's work allows his viewers the opportunity to think, laugh, and uncover the world around us with his Weimaraner models. Through his photographs of dogs in human situations, Wegman forces us to reanalyze our image of self, once stating: "The dog isn't really what it is in my pictures; there's something fuzzy and energizing about something that's becoming something it isn't...when it's not that, when it's becoming that, there's something kind of amazing and more beautiful about it."
