Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynast Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A set of 5 hand-built faience shabti funerary figures (plural ushabti) enrobed in lustrous, turquoise-hued glaze. Each mummiform figure presents with arms crossed atop the chest and with a bulbous wig topping the head. Written in red on the verso of each is the 1947 accession number from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Size of largest: 0.36" L x 0.63" W x 2.46" H (0.9 cm x 1.6 cm x 6.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; deaccessioned from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, bequeathed to the museum in 1947 (Acc. nos. 47.20.457, 47.20.458, 47.20.459, 47.20.460, 47.20.461); ex-collection of Lillian Thomas Pratt (1876 - 1947), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA

  • Condition: Each with minor pitting, fading to glaze pigment, and softening to finer details, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to overall forms and glaze pigment in most areas. Old museum accession number written in red paint on verso of each figure.
