Description:

First Nations, Northwest Coast Canada, British Columbia, Vancouver, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A beautiful handmade button blanket made from wool twill, appliqued red felt, a printed cotton panel, and embroidered with mother-of-pearl buttons. This button blanket has a classic formline motif of an eagle to denote the wearer's clan or family affiliation, and the blanket is worn like a cape for ceremonial dances and potlatches. Besides the crest imagery, the construction of the blanket is symbolic: the red borders represent the planks of the longhouse surrounding a door (the black field) that leads inside the longhouse, and the cotton panel is the hole where the smoke exits the longhouse. This area also aligns with the wearer's back of their neck. Brass curtain rings were added by the previous owner to display this blanket as a wall tapestry. Size: 60" L x 51.5" W (152.4 cm x 130.8 cm)
