Description:

First Nations, Canada, British Columbia, Nisga'a culture, ca. 2000 CE. A bentwood cedar cradleboard painted with formline motifs and signed on the verso by the artists. The outer frame is bentwood, carefully formed by cutting grooves and steaming the wood until pliable and molded into shape, and 4 wood planks are nailed across the bottom, with gaps between the upper broads and nylon ropes woven through bored holes for suspension. Cloth straps could be woven through the gaps for securing the baby in place. The base is signed by Virgil and Shirley Stanley and dated "2000." Married artists Virgil Stanley (b. 1957) and Shirley Stanley (b. 1965), are both First Nations artists of the Nisga'a and Gitxsan tribe respectively.
