Description:

Known as 'Agere Ifa', these figurative, caryatid bowls where used by the Yoruba priests as presentation vessels for the sixteen palm nut offerings during Ifa divination ritual. The bird support most likely represents a hen - possibly either a guinea fowl or simply a chicken. From Nigeria, early 20th C. 6.50"H x 5.50"D (16.25cm x 13.75 cm), and was carved from a tight-grained hard wood. Provenance: Bart family collection, NY and FL, since the 1950's.   • Condition: Condition is very fine with a varied, medium brown, aged patina. There are areas of village repair (encrusted, darker coloration) along old splits in the wood.
