Description:

Western Greece, Rhodes, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A mold-made terracotta protome depicting a female head, presumably a goddess, wearing a himation drawn up over her head, with curled locks of hair gracefully framing her visage. Her face displays lovely almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, apple cheeks, a rounded chin, and full lips drawn into a slight smile. Although the exact significance of this signature Archaic smile is unknown, scholars suggest that the ancient Greeks interpreted it as a sign of life associated with good health and well-being. Size: 6.75" H (17.1 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

A protome is a type of bust made by pressing a thin layer of terracotta into a single mold. These were first made in Rhodes; however, from the early fifth century BCE onwards they spread throughout Greece. Originally, this piece would have been painted in a colorful palette.
