Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built male bichrome pottery figure intended for a shaft tomb - to watch over or assist the deceased in the afterlife. He sits with hands placed upon upraised knees and ankles touching one another, looking forward with black tear marks under his incised eyes which flank a long, protruding nose, his mouth open as if singing, praying, or chanting. Though nude save a headdress, his body is adorned with red pigment and black body paint or tattoo marks. Size: 5.5" W x 8.25" H (14 cm x 21 cm)
