Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca.1000 to 1550 CE. A hand-built earthenware effigy vessel with a globular body and a carinated neck that perhaps serves as a portraiture or representation of a warrior or significant figure from the mythical world of the Tairona peoples. The personage's body serves as the body of the vessel with arching arms to the sides forming strap handles, the fingers delineated as if resting on the figure's hips in a bold stance. The face consists of a painted ridge outlining the wide visage- and incised linear markings represent tattoos or scarification. The coffee bean eyes and mouth are impressed in the center to create a tranquil expression. The stub nose forms a loop- although compacted with earthen deposits, this may have been perforated for suspending a copper or gold septum ring. These figural pots were funerary vessels that served as urns or contained goods that were buried with the deceased. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 6.75" H (16.5 cm x 17.1 cm)
