Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Sihuas Valley culture, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A fine textile coca bag formed from tightly-woven cactus fibers in hues of wheat, coffee, caramel, and cream. The lengthy bean-holding bag has a rounded bottom with a hanging strand, a rectangular body, and a flat top section. Abstract motifs of large mountainous shapes adorn the center of the body, and the upper rim is lined with dozens of vertical bars. Mounted against a fabric display panel. Size (textile): 6.75" W x 21.3" H (17.1 cm x 54.1 cm); size (display panel): 24.75" W x 37" H (62.9 cm x 94 cm).

  • Condition: Bag is sewn shut to display panel, so viewing verso for condition is not possible. A few small areas of restoration to upper, middle, and lower body. Light fraying and loosening to some original fibers, with fading to pigmentation, and light creasing. Colors are still visible.
