Description:

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. A really gorgeous small gilded bronze belt buckle with a relief figure of a pegasus, front legs raised in a prance, shown in profile on the front. This is quite a unique piece, recalling a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome. Artwork bearing animal designs - mythological creatures lik this pegasus, scorpions, birds, stags, and lagomorphs are all known - are one of their most enduring symbols.
