Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 2nd century CE. A stunning flask of an attractive form, free-blown from translucent glass of a sumptuous cobalt-blue hue. The delicate vessel is defined by a slightly concave base, a bell-shaped body with a lower carination, a plateaued shoulder that tapers to a cylindrical neck, and a flared rim with a smooth lip. Fine layers of rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across the composition and nicely complement the vessel's deep sapphire hue. Size: 2.4" W x 3.6" H (6.1 cm x 9.1 cm)

For a stylistically similar example with a more rotund body and a taller neck, please see "Solid Liquid: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Glass." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1999, p. 59, fig. 91.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Martin Peretz collection, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1990s
