Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A lovely cast duck phalera - an ornament that was often awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers. The bird rests upon an integral pair of buttons which allowed this to be attached to a uniform, horse tack, or standard. While we may be more familiar with the Roman military's love of the mighty eagle (aquila) symbol, the duck was also just as symbolic. These migratory birds symbolized change and constant motion as well alertness. According to legend, it was a gaggle of geese or ducks that alerted Rome to the invasion of Gauls - their keen hearing made these gregarious birds exceptional watchdogs to warn of intruders and danger. Size: 1.6" L x 0.75" W x 0.75" H (4.1 cm x 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
